People have been collecting and storing items of all kinds for several decades and even centuries. Many antique items or family heirlooms would never have otherwise been so well kept in order to be around today. Some collectibles grow to be very valuable over time while others are valuable solely to those who possess them. Either way, keeping a collection can be both fun and rewarding.

Perhaps the two most common items that are collected by most people are coins and stamps. Stamps and coins certainly do increase in value over time, especially the limited release of certain types. The storage of these kinds of collectibles is extremely important. It is not enough to throw them in a box or drawer and hope for the best. If value is of any importance the piece must be kept in a safe place where it is protected from outside elements and even excess oxygen to prevent deterioration.

Vintage toys and games make fantastic collectibles. There are websites and stores dedicated solely to the collection of such items. Things like old metal lunchboxes with classic television or cartoon characters are making a comeback in terms of public interest. Replicas are being sold though none are as valued as the originals. When it comes to things that are worth collecting, anything that is considered vintage or antique is among the top of the list. Old toys like originals from classic television shows are embraced by adults seeking nostalgia from their past.

Some collectibles are works of art that should be preserved for both their historical as well as artistic value. Books are a prime example of something that can become so old yet retain so much necessary information. Those who lived centuries ago can still teach us today through these kinds of works. Paintings fall into this category as well. Many people have paintings and sculptures in their home. Regardless of who made these pieces, they all make wonderful collectibles and display pieces.

Perhaps one of the most common and entertaining collectibles is the building of models. Models are insanely popular among people of all ages. Everything from trains to airplanes and cars can be built by hand and then decorated. Model cars are at the top of the popularity list. Replicas of muscle cars and movie automobiles makes a model set a great gift as well. They're fun to build on your own or in a family setting. Be daring and original by giving your car a crazy paint job or creating your very own express train complete with a train track.

Collections must start out with just one but before long they can become substantial. Reasons for collecting certain items vary among those who cherish them. But one thing that remains the same is that there is joy in doing so. Introduce children to collecting in order to share something you love as well as teach them the value of caring for something meaningful so that it may in turn be bestowed upon another.
